MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Karate Grand Master Kang Rhee has died, according to sources. Rhee’s Facebook page announced, “It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of the Founder and Master of PaSaRyu, Grandmaster Kang Rhee.”
Kang Rhee taught Elvis Presley martial arts and the singer went on to become a black-belt himself at the Kang Rhee Institute in the 1970s. Rhee taught karate to countless Mid- South youngsters and adults, including martial arts champion Bill “Superfoot” Wallace.
Kang Rhee held karate tournaments benefiting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital from 1970 to 1993.
He was the founder of the PaSaRyu Martial Arts Association established in 1966.
The Funeral services for Grand Master Kang H. Rhee will be held Friday August 23rd at 7:30 pm at Korean Baptist Church of Memphis in Collierville, Tn, located at 9650 E Shelby Dr.
Other accomplishments by Grand Master Rhee include: Graduated B.A. Business from Yonsel Univ. Seoul Korea
Est. and served as Captain of Yonsel Univ. Martial Arts Team.
Head Instructor of Korean Military Intelligence Group Officers.
Trained in Kong Soo Do, Chang Mu Kwan, Kwon Bup, Kang Duk Won and Han Kuk Hap Ki Do 1953-1964.
Seventh Dan Kuk Ki Kwon (H.Q. Tae Kwon Do in Seoul Korea 1975.
Producer of Annual Karate Championship Fundraiser for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
State of Tn. Governor's Award, 1999.
City of Memphis Mayor Certification of Appreciation for Various Community Services.
Member of Presidents Advisory Council on Democratic and Peaceful Unification of Republic of Korea since 1991.
Founder of the World Black Belt Bureau Association.
