PAPER CUP ELVIS DRANK FROM IN 1956 ON EBAY
January 17th,  2018   -   Tulsa World   /   Elvis Express Radio
A Dixie cup that the King of Rock ’n’ Roll reportedly drank from 62 years ago in downtown Tulsa is up for auction on eBay.

A fan of Elvis Presley, known only as June, snagged the cup on April 19, 1956, said Wade Jones, an Elvis collector from North Carolina. June reportedly got the cup from the singer
himself just before he left town for a show in Oklahoma City.

Jones is auctioning the item — just an old Dixie paper cup from a water cooler — on eBay. As of Wednesday afternoon, the high bid was $1,080.

“And the thing’s going to break loose, I’m telling you,” Jones said. “It doesn’t close until Sunday night, and it’s a damn paper cup.”

Elvis performed April 18, 1956, at the Tulsa Fairgrounds Pavilion. A Tulsa World story remarks how he drank cola from a paper cup between shows while talking to reporters.

But that’s not the cup being auctioned. Jones said his cup is one that Elvis used the following day. It’s now in a box, on which June wrote the time, 10:30 a.m., the date and “3rd &
Boston.” Jones said June also wrote Elvis’ name and the date on the cup itself.

Elvis had stayed the night at an unknown downtown Tulsa hotel, Jones said. He “woke up the next morning, and I guess he had breakfast and he went shopping for clothes, and that’
s when the cup was gotten.”
“He drank from that cup right before he left Tulsa to go to Oklahoma City,” Jones said.

Later in his career, Elvis performed four more concerts in Tulsa: June 20, 1972, March 1 and 2, 1974, and July 4, 1976. He died Aug. 16, 1977, at his Graceland mansion in
Memphis at age 42.

Jones said he is selling the cup primarily because he did not personally collect it. Among his memorabilia is a similar cup he obtained from a 1977 show in Charlotte, North Carolina,
he said.

Jones said he obtained the Tulsa cup by way of another collector who knew he had the cup from 1977. In a letter supporting authenticity, a man named Jason Knight wrote that he
acquired the cup from June’s granddaughter, whom he did not name.

Knight states that June, who met the 21-year-old singer on that day in 1956, “was lucky enough to receive a signed photo along with this blue and white Dixie cup that Elvis had
been drinking from.” June requested to keep the cup “as a little memento,” the letter says.

Ebay listing runs until Monday 22nd January at 2:54am [UK Time]  Highest Bid at time of story published on E.E.R is ...  US-$1,075.00.
