The genesis of some titanic musical careers is the focus of “Sun Records,” an eight-part drama that begins Thursday, Feb. 23, on CMT (right after “Nashville”).
You know the names — Elvis Presley (Drake Milligan), Johnny Cash (Kevin Fonteyne), Jerry Lee Lewis (Christian Lees), Carl Perkins (Dustin Ingram). And perhaps you already
know the gist of their intertwining stories from having seen “Million Dollar Quartet,” the stage musical.
The CMT series delves into the musical influences that shaped these young men on their rise to stardom.
And, of course, there’s the record label of the title and the man who founded it, Sam Phillips (Chad Michael Murray), who as the series opens is just setting up shop in Memphis in
the early 1950s.
Among the other familiar figures who turn up is Colonel Tom Parker (Billy Gardell), Presley’s eventual manager. When we first meet Parker, he’s working a booth at a carnival that
features dancing ducks.
