|A SCANDALOUS PERFORMANCE
June 10, 2016 - By Ron Brown, Rivet / Elvis Express Radio
|Elvis was already a major star, Heartbreak Hotel was his first national hit, and he'd been on TV seven times before already, including a prior appearance on Milton Berle.
It was unlike anything America had ever seen before...
when they tuned into the most popular how on tv, the Milton Berle show on June 5th 1956...
It's the subject of our rock around the clock, i'm Ron Brown... The song that caused a national scandal, Elvis Presley singing about a hound dog.
Elvis was already a major star, Heartbreak Hotel was his first national hit, and he'd been on tv seven times before already, including a prior appear ance on Milton Berle.
But he hadn't done anything like Hound Dog before...
it was the first time america saw him perform without his guitar.
It was his hip shaking gyrations that earned him the nickname elvis the pelvis..
and earned him a nation of followers and critics...
when elvis slowed down the song the hip shaking and pelvis thrusts became more pronounced/... and maybe because his drummer D.J. Fontana used to play in strip clubs before
he joined Elvis's band, the song took on a burlesque feel...
Thousands of angry phone calls and protest letters poured into NBC — so much so that Ed Sullivan vowed to never have him on his show... but three months later... Elvis was so
big, that Ed Sullivan had to eat his words... the popular myth is that Sullivan had the cameramen shoot Presley only from the waist up when he moved... but it's not true... Elvis is
shown full body, with guitar but there's no slow gyrating.
